Alberta
Alberta's Fair Trading Act affects how most household purchases can be sold by prohibiting unfair practices and misleading advertising. In specific types of transactions, including direct selling of home repair and renovation services, the Act provides consumer cancellation rights, special contract requirements and a seller's code of conduct. Special regulations apply to contractors in Alberta if:
- they accept money before work is complete, and
- they look for work or discuss or finalize a contract away from their normal place of business - for example, in your home.
Contractors who carry out both practices must be licensed under the Fair Trading Act by Alberta Government Services, Consumer Services Branch. They must also be bonded by a bonding company.
